Book two in "The Forty-Eighters" series.
4 July 1883, Indiana. Mollie Zimmer-Eby reads an article in the Ligonier Leader about her brother Florian’s participation in the 1848 Baden Rebellion, and she is livid. How dare Florian assert that their brother Karl is long dead. Although, Karl has been missing for twenty years, Mollie refuses to presume death. Since Florian told the reporter an exaggerated story of events, Mollie sets out to research and write The War Against the People as she struggles to accept the possibility that Karl is dead.
The Grand Duchy of Baden, 1848. The fragmented patchwork of kingdoms and duchies that make up the German Confederation become the stage for a dramatic call to unity and reform. The streets erupt in protest. The people demand a new order – one defined by freedom, unity, and democratic rights. And Baden is no exception, providing fifteen-year-old Florian Zimmer the perfect opportunity to prove his manhood. Shortly after Florian runs away to join the rebel army, his older brother, Lt. Johan Zimmer, is ordered to put down the rebellion by any means necessary. The rest of the Zimmer family and their friends struggle to prevent the brothers from meeting on the battlefield.
